Bee keeping class at AUB
Rami Ollaik is currently an Apiculture and Beekeeping professor at the American University of Beirut. His class examines the history of beekeeping within the area and Lebanese tradition, honeybee species and colony structure and race evolution, and the ecology of honey bees. The course looks at the ecological interaction, in terms of both individual and social aspects of bees and their colonies. Students also learn how to construct bee hives and harvest honey, working on one of the only urban apiaries in the region. He also runs the National Bee Day event at AUB, which falls on May 2nd of this year. In this event, Rami and his students work to raise awareness about the important role bees play in nature. They also sell a wide array of honey-based products in order to fund the campus apiary. Various types of honey, baked goods, and other products promoting Lebanon’s bees are put on display.
